Warehouse Appliance discusses absorption refrigeration

At Warehouse Appliance, we have spent years educating homeowners on the benefits of gas refrigerators, but how do they work? They work on the principle of absorption refrigeration, but first, we need to define what absorption refrigeration means.

Simply put, absorption refrigeration “absorbs” the heat inside the fridge.
Removing the heat makes the air inside the fridge cold. The absorption unit or “Cooling Unit” is located in the back of the fridge in a sealed box which contains an array of steel pipes.

Both propane and natural gas are commonly used in absorption refrigerators.
The gas is used to heat the absorption unit. The heat produced by the gas, which is located at the bottom of the unit, activates a chemical mixture inside the cooling unit. When hot, this mixture changes from a liquid into a vapor and begins moving to the top of the unit in the same way coffee is made in a percolator.

Once at the top of the unit, the chemical mixture - which is now ammonia vapor - condenses into liquid ammonia. Now in the liquid state, the ammonia begins pouring down the steel pipes. The pipes, which are in a zig-zag pattern, go through the freezer compart where the liquid ammonia begins absorbing the heat.

Because it is at the top of the refrigerator, the liquid ammonia absorbs the heat in the freezer compartment first and continues flowing down to the fridge. If the ammonia has not reached its maximum absorption in the freezer it will continue to absorb heat from the refrigerator as it moves down the pipes. This process is the reason the freezer cools down before the lower part of the refrigerator.

About consul refrigerators

Warehouse appliance provides consumers the necessary information for purchasing a consul refrigerator.

The Consul Refrigerator is no longer in production. The factory has ceased production in 2012 with no plans to restart. It was the smallest of the gas fridges that we sold with 7.8 cubic foot capacity. The smallest unit we currently sell is the EZ Freeze EZ-10 at 10 cubic feet overall capacity. The Consul unit was built in Brazil by the Whirlpool Corporation. Production was briefly moved to Argentina for economic reasons, The Danby Consul Propane Refrigerators but after only a few years, production returned to Brazil. The unit's production run spanned over 30 years with very little changes made in design within the past 20 years. The main cooling unit remained identical throughout the last 25 plus years. Many cabinet cosmetic changes were made in this time frame and only a handful of mechanical control updates occurred.


For the most part, they are very reliable propane refrigerators with only a few quirks. Maintenance is higher than the EZ Freeze Brand and most other modern built gas refrigerators. Some folks experience some frustration with the maintenance due to inexperience. We have serviced over 1000 Consuls at our repair facility over the years and it is rare that we can't bring one back to life. Usually the repairs are under $200.00 which includes a full service. cleaning, and a thorough testing.

They are very simple in design with no moving parts. Most problems are related to servicing of the burner caused by owner neglect. The unit does have one factory design flaw that we have identified and developed a cure for. This flaw is present in every machine but usually only rears it's head in operating climates over 2500 feet in elevation. It poses little to no danger to the user other than the fact that the food will not be cold and can cause spoilage.

We realize there are thousands of units in vacation homes or hunting camps within North America and we cannot possible service everyone of them. We offer technical telephone help to customers that purchased the original unit from us. The repairs are too time consuming to do a walk thru over the telephone. All About the Servel Gas Refrigerators

Gas refrigerators have been in production since the early 1900's and used in households as a standard common everyday appliance until the late 1950's when electricity and electric refrigerators became the normal. Warehouse Appliance offers some history about gas refrigerators. Although they were not as common as an electric refrigerator after that , they did not go extinct. The popularity continued with the use being primarily in cabins, ranches, out buildings, and vacation homes that did not have on grid electricity available. The most popular of the production units available in the 1940's was the SERVEL Brand. Many different models were produced. Old Servel propane gas refrigerator. The typical capacity of Servel was between 8 and 10 cubic feet. Some units were of a single door type with a small freezer section on the interior. More deluxe later models included double exterior doors with the freezer on top. Some rare models have double side by side doors. We have seen some models that have electric options such as interior lights and even electric ice makers. The units were very well insulated and made of mostly steel construction. Life span of the unit can easily reach over 60 years.

The down fall to these old gas refrigerators is the burner design. The burners were designed to run at around 3500 BTU which is double the output of a modern day propane gas refrigerator. The burner design is not as efficient as the newer models and were very susceptible to burning foul and putting off high levels of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Considering the era in which they were designed and the materials available, it is understandable that they are not as efficient and safe as today's propane fridges. This inefficiency resulted in a government recall. The recall offers a $100.00 payment for the disposal of each refrigerator. If you are the owner of one of these units and would like to benefit from the recall, call the Servel Action Committee at 800-782-7431 and request Recall Packet to be mailed to you. You will also be reimbursed for transportation costs associated with the disposal. Save your receipt to file with the form. You will also need to remove and mail in the ID tags from the fridge chassis and cooling absorption unit.

Although these units have a great retro look to them, they are not as safe as what is available today. The units of today also have many more features not invented in the 1940's.
